( No, I am not sponsored by the Dollar General. I just wanted to mention this as they seem to be very readily available in most areas.)

Why I Love This Easy Homemade Pizza

I really do love to cook but there are nights that I just Do Not Want to think about cooking. On those nights, I usually pop in a frozen pizza or order one from the local pizza place. The cost of pizza is obnoxious these days! Unfortunately, the prices on pizza seem to have doubled. It usually ends up costing my family between $40-$50 for 2 medium size restaurant pizzas, if I want any toppings. For the frozen variety that is larger and tastes good, it is now around $10 for a pizza, and my family of 6 needs at least 2!

When you are living off of 1 income and are on a budget, even the $10 dollar pizza is too expensive for a single family meal. So, what is a struggling and stressed mother to do? For me, the answer is having a quick and inexpensive meal, such as this Easy Homemade Pizza, on hand.

The truth is that this simple meal is healthier than anything that you are getting from the frozen food section. Additionally, the pizza is bigger and tastes better.

We do not believe in small meals in our household. Fortunately for us, this pizza is ample enough to feed 3 hungry adults and 3 kids in our home. If you want to stretch it, you can pair the pizza with a Caesar salad ( from the bag for ease) and together you will have a complete meal.

Supplies Needed for Easy Homemade Pizza

  • A pizza pan or Cookie sheet
  • Tin Foil
  • Pizza Cutter
  • Mixing bowl
  • measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients for Easy Homemade Pizza

  • Yeast- Active Dry Yeast works great but you will need to proof it first. If you go with Instant Yeast the recipe will come together even quicker. I buy a jar in bulk from Sam’s Club and keep in my freezer.
  • Flour- All-purpose or bread flour works great. Just FYI, a 5 lb bag of flour will make around 6 large pizzas!!
  • Salt
  • Sugar- Granulated
  • Olive oil
  • Pizza Sauce- You can make your own easily or just buy a jar from the store.
  • Cheese- We use Mozzarella most of the time but sometimes we just use what is in the fridge.
  • Garlic Salt
  • Italian seasoning
  • Additional toppings that you love

Step By Step Instructions for Easy Homemade Pizza

Step 1: Pizza Dough

*If you have Instant Dry Yeast skip this step. Go to Step 2.*

Proof the Active Dry Yeast:

Add sugar to the yeast.

Then add warm water *NOT HOT WATER. Hot water will kill the yeast. Wait until the yeast bubbles and looks creamy before moving to step 2.

Step 5: Pizza Dough

Shape the dough into a ball. The dough may seem a little dry at this point. Do not worry it will begin to become wetter as it sits.

Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it rise. This will take about 20-30 minutes. If you want to, you can let it continue to rise for up to 2 hours.

Step 6: Pizza Dough

When the dough is done rising, knead the dough and shape it into a ball.

Step 7: Pizza Dough

Get out the pizza pan or cookie sheet. I like to cover mine with tin foil for easy clean-up. Dust the pizza pan with flour to prevent the dough from sticking to the pan.

Place pizza dough ball on pizza pan. Press down on the ball and begin to flatten out and shape the pizza into a circle. Little hands love to help with this part.

pizza base

Create edges around the circle once the pizza is in the shape you want it to be in.

Step 8: Pizza Dough

Sprinkle Garlic salt and Italian seasoning on the pizza.

Step 9: Pizza Base

At this time, I like to put my pizza base in the oven for about 5 minutes to pre-cook the crust. It prevents it from becoming soggy.

Step 10: Pizza

Get the pizza base out of the oven and thinly spread the pizza sauce evenly over the pizza base. Make sure that there is less sauce on the center of the dough or you will have a soupy soggy pizza.

Cover the pizza base with a generous amount of cheese. Then add your other toppings on top of the cheese.

Step 11: Pizza

Place Pizza in the oven for 25-30 minutes. You will know the pizza is done when the crust begins to brown.
