Never have I ever considered putting apple cider vinegar in my coffee but apparently it is a thing! A simple search shows that there are all kinds of claims regarding this practice. Naturally, I did some super scientific research and tried it out for myself.

I quickly set out to add a tablespoon of ACV to my morning cup of coffee. It was OK. Not the best but OK. It tasted pretty similar to that one time I tried to substitute yogurt for creamer. Please, don’t judge me. It was a desperate moment. It was a little tangy, not my favorite but it could work. Or maybe I was doing it wrong? Besides that, why did anyone ever decide this was a good idea?! More research was definitely needed. So this is what I found:

Why Would Someone Put Apple Cider Vinegar In Their Coffee?

Many people claim that drinking apple cider vinegar in your coffee aids in weight loss. I found a similar trend where influencers on TikTok make claims that a twist of lemon in your coffee helps the weight melt right off. The thing is there is no scientific evidence backing either. Even more, there is no scientific evidence indicating that lemons or citric acid are effective in promoting weight reduction.

On the other hand, apple cider and other fruit vinegars have had scientific studies linking them to weight loss, reduced blood sugar levels, reduced cholesterol levels, and improved lipid profiles. The belief is that the acetic acid in vinegar ( not citric acid) may be the substance that is responsible for producing these health benefits.

The theory is that the combination of coffee and apple cider vinegar would amplify the metabolic and potential health benefits of one another. This comes from the idea that the stimulants in coffee increase your metabolism. So basically you are creating a double whammy of weight loss! Maybe.

Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

If you are trying to lead a healthy lifestyle you should consider adding 1- 2 tablespoons of diluted vinegar to your daily diet. Any vinegar is beneficial, even the good old white vinegar that gets used for salad dressing. It is believed that the acetic acid present in vinegar is the champion of healthy weight management in this story.

If you want an additional boost of health benefits, use raw apple cider vinegar. This type of vinegar has the mother still in it. Mother is the cloudy substance present in raw vinegar. It is filled with healthy bacteria and yeasts. The only issue here is that there is no guarantee that commercial vinegars still have living probiotics present. Good bacteria and yeast are heat-sensitive and die off quickly if they get too hot. Your best bet is to make your own fruit vinegar.

Additionally, vinegar contains polyphenols and antioxidants that contribute to many of the positive health outcomes attributed to vinegar.

Studies show that apple cider vinegar has the following benefits

  • Anti-tumor/ anti-cancerous- inhibits cancer growth
  • Anti-diabetic- produces lower blood sugar levels and stabilizes insulin levels
  • Reduces cholesterol and triglyceride levels
  • Helpful for weight management and reduction of belly fat
  • Gut health improving probiotics in raw vinegar with mother

Health Benefits of Coffee

Coffee is filled with stimulants, vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, and chlorogenic acid. It has been credited with weight loss and energy. As well as, the possible prevention of certain diseases such as strokes, type 2 diabetes, and Parkinson’s disease.

Safety issues of coffee and apple cider vinegar

The biggest issue with creating a mixture of apple cider vinegar and coffee is the acid content. They are both very acidic substances. One of the potential side effects of eating highly acidic food is that it can destroy your tooth enamel! Even worse, acidic foods can cause an upset stomach, heartburn, and ulcers in the throat or stomach. Ulcers can be very dangerous and cause a person to bleed to death! That is not something that we want.

Additionally, the stimulants in coffee can increase a person’s heart rate and blood pressure. Therefore, we need to proceed with caution when combining coffee and apple cider vinegar. Please do not drink it on an empty stomach! Furthermore, I do not recommend adding straight vinegar to your daily coffee! Don’t worry I have a solution that will help you to reap the benefits of both!

The flavor is sweet, sour, and rounded out with a hint of an earthy flavor.
